1900-1985
Biography
I am Lessie Bell Champion Moffett, second child to George “Dock” and Henrietta Champion, I was born August 10, 1901 in Americus (Sumter County), GA among eleven siblings. During my life, I experienced quite bit of life changes and seen new changes come and go in this world. One of my saddest memory was the death of President John F. Kennedy November 22, 1963. I knew he would be the president to bring on new changes for our people. After I got older, I went to work as a housekeeper for a large number of years and then married Grover Cleveland Roberts in 1919 and we had eight children; four boys, Henry Lee, Jessie Lee, Grover Jr. and Ernest “Peter” and four girls Katie Bell, Essie Mae, Ruby Lee and Annie Cary. I lost two babies at their early age (Essie Mae, 2 ½ and Annie Cary 13 months) and my oldest son Henry Lee died October 1973. After Grover, Sr. passed, I later married Newt Moffett on September 5, 1950 and we had no children. As time pass, I had 25 grandchildren, host of great-grand, great-great grand-children, nieces, nephews and cousins. As time went on and years went by my health started declining and my daughter Katie Bell got me my own place on her property and she and the children started to care for me. I felt so loved being near my family and being able to see my grand and great grandchildren when they came to visit. Over the next few years my health decline even more and my memory started to decline more and more. Soon time past and I went to visit the Lord on January 21, 1985.
